Dating Korean Women – A Few Facts

I have dated several Korean women and I have to say they were all beautiful. They were loving, caring, sweet and very sexy. What they weren’t, was interested in a long term relationship. Of course your mileage may vary but this is my experience, take it for what it is, just one man’s experiences.

First of all I found that Korean women are very proud of their country. They have a national pride that is strong and unflinching. I have never heard a single bad word about Korea from any of the Korean women I dated or the hundreds of Korean students I taught English to.

In fact, one of the exercises in a Korean produced English text book asks the student what it is they like about being Korean. I was stunned to see how many wrote that it was their racial or ethnic purity. While they are very friendly and will have a foreigner boyfriend, the chances of marrying a Korean are pretty slim.

The reasons for this include the parental influences that even modern day young Koreans are under. The parents often dictate the university courses their children will take and the career path they will follow. After all they are older, wiser and most likely paying for the education. A Korean woman would want her husband to be able to communicate with her parents and show them due respect, as well as do as they wish. That is difficult with someone who doesn’t speak Hangungmal (Korean) and a waste of time with the average western male. Most don’t ‘obey’ their own parents much, let alone their inlaws.

That racial purity issue is bigger than many think. While it is true that during the Japanese occupation from 1912 to 1945 Koreans and Japanese did mix and of course there were many Korean women married to GIs after the Korean War; since South Korea has become one of the leading economies in Asia the frequency of marriages between Koreans and foreigners has declined considerably.

For a brief period I had a Korean girlfriend in Hawaii in 1986. She was divorced from a USAF officer she had met and married back in the late 70’s. Drove a jeep like a lunatic and kept a Korean boyfriend on the side who was a ‘taxi-dancer’ at a Korean drinking club off Hotel Street. She introduced him as her brother but I twigged she was having me pay for her boyfriend to dance with her and drink with us at our table, all the time making jokes about me in Korean. I quickly realized why the Air Force guy divorced her.

As the standard of living for South Koreans improved due to the hard work of the post war generations, the opportunities for Korean and foreigner to meet and interact became fewer and fewer.  Women no longer needed to look to foreigners for a future where they could provide for their families and parents, just as the men were no longer having to work overseas as migrant labour as they did in the 60s and 70s. In modern day South Korea you would be hard pressed to find a Korean hooker working the bars and streets, most of them are Filipino or Chinese, even eastern Europeans and white women from former Soviet Asiatic republics..

So if you live and work in Korea you can find a Korean girlfriend fairly easily but she will be similar in many ways to her western sisters. At least in sophistication and sadly also consumerism. However she will probably have a college education and be very independent, a far cry from the sub-servient sex slave image many men still have of Asian women today. She will be little different to a Korean-American girl, brought up in the States from Korean parents. For the most part the only differences will be her accent and English fluency.

If you are fortunate enough to have a beautiful Korean lady as your girlfriend then you are indeed a lucky guy. Just don’t think she needs you or is impressed by the fact you are a westerner. If anything, she probably has you as something of a fashion accessory, the latest fad among her circle of friends might be to have a westerner boyfriend.

Be prepared for a very open minded woman in many ways but very close minded when it comes to family and duty. It also pays if you like garlic, Koreans love their garlic fermented cabbage, the national dish called Kim Chee. You will develop a taste for that if you develop a taste for Korean women.
